On 30 June 2025, the Australian Government announced a $12 million investment to support 14 local biotech and MedTech companies developing cutting-edge medical solutions targeting cardiovascular disease and diabetes—two of Australia’s most pressing chronic health challenges.
The funding was awarded under the Targeted Translation Research Accelerator (TTRA) program, delivered by MTPConnect as part of the broader Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) strategy to bolster homegrown medical innovation.
Backing Medical Devices and Diagnostic Technology
A portion of the funding will support six companies developing innovative medical devices and diagnostic tools:
- CathRx (NSW) – $1.1M for atrial fibrillation solutions
- ID&E (NSW) – $1.2M for ocular drug delivery devices
- Theia Medical (SA) – $1M for high-risk coronary artery disease detection
- Venstra Medical (NSW) – $1M for cardiogenic shock treatments
- Wavewise Analytics (VIC) – $997K for stroke diagnostics
- ZiP Diagnostics (VIC) – $1.019M for early pre-eclampsia detection
Public–Private Innovation at Scale
With an additional $17 million in industry co-funding, the total investment pool exceeds $29 million, highlighting the strength of public–private collaboration in Australia’s life sciences sector.
Federal Health Minister Mark Butler stated:
“This funding will support exciting new treatment and management options for Australians with cardiovascular disease and diabetes, while expanding the Australian-made MedTech and biotech sector as part of our vision of a future made in Australia.”
🇦🇺 Building Sovereign Capability in MedTech
This investment marks a significant step toward enhancing Australia’s capacity in health technology commercialisation, domestic manufacturing, and reducing reliance on imported medical solutions. With over 2.6 million Australians affected by cardiovascular disease and diabetes, the initiative is both an economic and public health imperative.
